The Postgraduate Program in Linguistics of the Federal University of Ceará (Universidade Federal do Ceará – UFC) started in 1993 to offer Master’s and PhD degree programs in the referred area.
The Master’s Degree program and the PhD Degree program are 24 months long and 48 months long, respectively. In both programs, the following requirements must be fulfilled:
1) Compulsory presentation and dissertation defense, in the case of the Master’s Degree conclusion; and a thesis, for the Doctorate Degree program.
2) Completion of studies in disciplines and activities expressed in credit units, and the Master’s Degree student must complete a minimum of 30 credits, of which 24 in subjects and 6 in dissertation activities; or 60 credits, of which 48 in disciplines and 12 corresponding to the thesis activities, in the case of the PhD Degree students.
The PPGLIN-UFC Curricular Structure offers the possibility of developing projects, whose results can support the development of reference grammar of the Portuguese Language and the reflection on themes related to Linguistics and the improvement of grammar teaching, reading and writing at all levels.
The main objective of the PPGLIN-UFC is to offer excellent training, with solid linguistic background, to professionals who work at a higher level as researchers and professors in the area of Linguistics.
In addition to this larger goal, the formation of the PPGLIN-UFC programs gives the professional the ability to provide advice to plan and define policies for teaching the mother tongue and a foreign language.
Each year, several events are organized, such as meetings about each area of the Program, lectures, courses administered by visiting professors, both national and foreign, among others. The Program also hosts a plethora of institutional exchange programs (partnerships and cooperation agreements) with several Brazilian and foreign universities.
Currently, the Program has a team of 34 highly qualified researchers. Over its 29 years of existence, more than 647 Masters and Doctors have been trained. Our alumni staff have made a significant contribution to the area of Linguistics, with a strong presence in the Brazilian Public Institutions of Higher Education and, in particular, in the Northeastern ones, helping with the development of the area through relevant scientific production, published in the form of books and articles in Brazil and overseas, through the outstanding dedication to teaching in the area of Linguistics.
